Hello! Thanks for tuning in for the latest issue of the Spotify Newsletter.
The good folks at Spotify headquarters took a journey to understand how Spotify listeners explore new music.
What they found spanned listeners across generations, and music across decades.
They packed in quite a truckload of data and details about music discovery.
Nearly 2 billion music discoveries happen on Spotify daily they tell us.
There are countless ways for Spotify to lead you to new music; I feel they succeed nicely as my very own streaming sherpa, guiding me across a seemingly endless ocean of music.
The Discover Weekly playlist stands out, for me, as a key part of my discovery routine. I’m always keen to see what the algorithms have decided to throw my way.
Of course, I also have my pick of the zillions of playlists served up when I begin the day’s music experience.
The (wonderful, frustrating, exciting) adventure that is seeking out / stumbling upon music is a personal thing. We all plot our course for music discovery differently.
MIDiA’S Tatiana Cirisano wrote a nice article about music discovery being ‘about the journey, not the moment.’
Discovery efforts often focus too much on a moment, like hearing a new song on Stranger Things or in a TikTok video. But making that moment happen is just the beginning of a long journey — one that hopefully continues with listening to the full song, researching the artist, streaming more music, eventually becoming a fan, spreading fandom, and buying merchandise and live tickets.
‘We’ want to discover and revel in new music. The artists and marketers and labels are desperate to make sure their music is first stop on the journey.
It’s quite an exciting/intriguing game of discovery.
Happy Friday! Have a nice day!
PS: The truly wonderful Tony Bennett left us today. If there ever was a good time to discover some truly amazing music… take a deep dive today into this man’s catalog of greatness. 🎵
