Spotify, Universal Strike AI Deal to Turn Fan Creations Into Revenue Stream
Groundbreaking responsible AI tool to launch as paid add-on for Spotify Premium users
Spotify and Universal Music Group have unveiled a sweeping new licensing agreement that will allow fans to legally create and share AI-generated covers and remixes using songs from participating artists and songwriters.
At the center of the deal is a forthcoming Spotify tool, powered by generative AI, that enables users to reinterpret existing tracks while ensuring that rights holders are compensated.
The initiative introduces a new monetization model in which artists and songwriters share directly in the revenue generated from these fan-driven creations.
The feature will roll out as a paid add-on for Spotify Premium subscribers, positioning fan creativity as both a discovery engine and an incremental income stream layered on top of traditional streaming royalties.
Spotify Co-CEO Alex Norström framed the move as a continuation of the platform’s effort to tackle complex industry challenges, emphasizing that the system is built around “consent, credit, and compensation” for creators. He noted that the partnership with Universal reflects an ongoing push to align technological innovation with artist interests.
Universal Music Group Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge described the initiative as part of a broader evolution in the relationship between artists and fans. He said the AI-enabled model is designed to deepen engagement while maintaining an artist-centric approach, adding that responsible use of emerging technology will be key to driving sustainable growth across the music ecosystem.
